Staff Name: Jamie Long

PADI IDC Staff Instructor 343755

Why did you learn to dive?

Having completed many 'try dives' on holidays I caught the bug and wanted to do more. As Toni and the kids also enjoyed it, we decided to do it as a family.

What is the favourite course you have done?

This is a tricky one as I have enjoyed so many but it would have to be either the Rescue Course which is a lot of fun or Divemaster which offers so many different challenges along the way.

What is your favourite course to teach?

Again difficult to choose but probably the Wreck specialty which starts with a gentle dive assessing the wreck, right through to penetration and using lines to ensure you can find your way back out.

Do you have a favourite piece of dive kit?

I have recently started side-mount diving and I am really enjoying messing about with all the new kit and as anyone who dives with me regularly knows, I have boxes and boxes of kit which I love collecting. However, I got the Suunto D5 for Christmas and this is now my favourite computer for sure.

What was a memorable dive for you?

There are so many I can think of, diving with very friendly Nurse Sharks in the Maldives or being surrounded by about 30 Hammerheads in Egypt but I think my favourite dive was on the SS Thistlegorm, a World War II armed Merchant Navy ship which was sunk in 1941near Ras Muhammad in the Red Sea. I have dived this wreck a few times now and I still find it fascinating, although much of the cargo has been taken by unscrupulous divers, there is still plenty to see including old munitions, locomotives, vehicles and rubber boots!
